Tales of the Sailor Corps, #1

Amare et castigare - Sailor Corps motto - To love and punish

It has been some time since Galaxia’s defeat. Those of us without a planet, those of us without a home, have wandered to the Sagittarius Zero Star, the Galactic Cauldron, to unite together to protect the cosmos.
We are few, but we are powerful. We look over the cosmos, fighting wrongs and triumphing over evil.
We are the Sailor Corps… and this is our story…

Sagittarius Zero Star - December 17, 1994, relative Earth date

I stand looking out upon the cosmos, thinking back to Galaxia and her destruction of my home, of all our homes. We are currently building a new home, here at the Galactic Cauldron, for those who have lost a home, for those who need a home, for those who need a purpose. I have a purpose. I lead the Sailor Corps.

So far, there is no danger, there are no warnings. I sigh. Looking around, I see five other senshi who have lost a home: Bes, Atlas, Hermes, Thor and Apshai. We are the first of those who will punish evil.

I do so want a mission. I want to fight a fire, rescue a drowned person, save a planet from certain destruction, anything. I turn back, and see Bes eating.

“Nothing,” I reply, “nothing to do.”

Bes chuckles at me. Her emerald green fuku is adorned with four-leaf clovers.

“I’m sure we’ll get something soon, Ra,” she tells me.

That’s my name, Sailor Ra. I have fire-red hair, and a temper to match.

“I don’t care if it’s soon, Bes, I want a mission, and I want it now!” I rage.

Atlas, the muscular senshi, is lifting weights behind me. She’s pressing over 500 keels (kilos).

“Calm down, Ra,” Atlas replies, “we just started. We just formed like hours ago. We won’t get a mission that quickly.”

I nod. Suddenly, something comes over the loudspeaker.

“If anyone can hear us, anyone at all, we need your help,” the voice pleads, crackling, “our tree… our planet… we’re dying. Coordinates…”

Static. I trace the source.

“Looks like we have a mission,” I reply.

“Goodgoodgood,” the speedy Sailor Hermes blurts,”Ican’twaittogooutandhelp.”

“The only question is,” I reply, “how do we get there? We have no spaceship. And our teleporting power is limited.”

Someone taps me on the shoulder.

“Perhaps I can help,” the voice replies.

“Who are you?” I respond.

“I go where I am needed, and stay as long as I am needed,” the voice replies. I so no one.

“I see.” I reply.

“I have a ship for you, sort of a loaner, until you can get a teleportation gate up,” the voice replies. It sounds female.

“Great. Sailor Corps, let’s go,” I reply.

Sector Unknown

“The message came from here,” Thor replies. She’s the one wearing what looks like a Viking outfit, and carrying a very large hammer.

“Scanning planets for life,” Bes responds.

“Manarewefarout,” Hermes replies. She’s the one who only wears the bodysuit of a sailor senshi.

“One planet, name unknown, life signs minimal,” Bes replies.

“Take us in,” I reply.

It looked like an Earth-like planet. Except it was much greener.

“Please respond. This is the Sailor Corps, please respond,” I repeat.

Another voice replies, “Sailor Corps? Who… what are you?” This one sounded female.

Yet another voice painfully speaks, “They have come to help, my children. Allow them to come down and help.”

“My name is Ann,” the other voice responds, “and Ail and I need your help.”

I reassure them that we will do our best to assist them.

“I will join you,” the voice who gave us the ship responds, “and you may call me Phantom Senshi.”

This… this Phantom Senshi shows us to the teleporters.

Suddenly, we were on the planet. It was like a jungle. Trees, grass, plants… but few people.

A male stepped forward.

“Ah, you have come,” the male responded, “I am Ail, and I sent the first message. My love, Ann, was the one who sent you the other message.”

Bes surveyed the surroundings.

“Why call us?” I ask him.

“Our tree, our precious tree, came here after leaving Earth, hoping to bring back its children on this planet.
Ann and I are still the only ones of our kind. We need to know if our tree is sick, or what is wrong with it. Please, help us.”

“We will,” I told them calmly, as Hermes sped around the tree.

“Iseenothingwrongontheoutside,” she responded.

Thor tapped the tree with her hammer.

“Seems strong,” she replied.

I looked for the Phantom Senshi, but saw nothing. Was she purposely not here?

Atlas began to throw some rocks around. We had heard the tree, but saw nothing wrong with it.

“What is wrong with this tree?” I asked the others of my team.

“It could be the soil,” Bes responded.

“Norain?” asked Hermes.

Atlas did not respond.

I began to run tests on the soil, as Ann spoke.

“We get enough rain, more than enough for normal plants to grow,” she replied, “but our tree… our tree… it needs energy to grow, not soil and water.”

“Energy?” Thor asked, “what kind?”

We all heard tales of the senshi of the Sol System, passed to us from Galaxia. She told us about Chaos. She told us about its forms, and to guard the Cauldron in case it forced its way back out.

“We forget,” Ail responded, “the journey had been long and hard, and although many of our kind were created, most did not survive the journey. Even still, when we landed here, the tree took root, and some survived, but then, the tree got sick.”

“Many of them did not make it,” Ann continued, “leaving us two. We are weak. We do not know how much longer we can survive.”

Bes held her arms out. “Maybe you just need a little luck to recall things.”

Bes’ magic is unusual. She can change things so that people are more lucky in situations than others. I, Sailor Ra, control the energy of a sun, Atlas is very strong, Hermes is very fast, and Thor controls the thunder. Apshai controls insects.

Apshai is looking around, trying to find any local insects to talk to. Sometimes, I wonder…

The biggest tree is the one right in front of us. I swear that it spoke to us before we landed…

“It did,” Ann replied, “but it is resting.”

“Do you recall anything else?” I asked her.

“Sailor Moon… saved us… years ago,” Ann responded, “healed our tree, and then we left Earth. Ail and I have been with the tree ever since then.”

Sailor Moon… the legendary senshi that destroyed Galaxia? The one who threw herself into the cauldron? That Sailor Moon? Seems impossible… but it may be true…

Hermes stopped running.

“I don’t get it,” she replied, talking at near a normal pace,” The tree is sick, but everything else seems fine. What kind of energy does it need?”

I shrug.

“They have to remember something,” Atlas responds.

I shrug.

This doesn’t make any sense. I sense no negative energy… nothing wrong.

Ail steps towards Ann, crying.

“I don’t want to die,” he says, hugging her.

The tree glows.

“What the…?” I ask.

“How soon you forget what I have told you,” a voice responds, “that positive energy, love, hope, friendship, is what I need.”

“And that would be?” I ask.

“That is the tree that speaks. I can feel it getting stronger.” Ail responds.

Ann nods.

“My children,” the voice continues, “we have suffered many losses in this journey, but together, you two will allow me to grow, and I will try to create more of your kind.”

“How could we forget.” Ail responded.

“It’s been too long,” Ann replied. They kissed.

Buds formed on the tree. It was a new beginning.

“Case closed?” I asked.

“Case closed,” Ann responded.

With that, we left for the ship, still dumbfounded as to how this tree could speak, let alone get its energy from two people such as this.

Aboard the ship, the Phantom Senshi looked at me, or at least I think she did.

“You tried your best, Ra,” she told me, “but in the end, they did all the work.”

I nodded. It was time to go back home.

Sagittarius Zero Star - December 18, 1994, relative Earth date

Back at our base, we ate breakfast, awaiting the next mission.

“I think I’ll stay on for a bit and watch you all perform,” the mysterious senshi responded.

Atlas just laughed.

A green-armored figure entered.

“So I hear there’s a new group in town,” he replied, “and a hot group at that. Looks like Shinji will have some asses to tap.”

It was him. The Green Lantern we heard about.

“No thanks,” I told him.

Apshai showed him a spider.

“That doesn’t creep me out, you know,” Shinji responded.

Atlas merely chuckled.

“And I don’t dig the muscular type,” he added.

He paused, as Hermes ran around.

“I hear you had your first mission yesterday. You did… okay in Shinji’s book,” he commented, “but next time, leave the real jobs to the professionals.”

“Says you,” Bes remarked.

“I love the feisty type,” Shinji remarked, purring.

“Get out,” I sneered.

“Well, excuuuuuuuuuuse me!” he shouted, “I didn’t know this place was so private.”

Laughing, he flew out of the Cauldron.

“Next time, I’ll tap Thor silly,” he quipped.

“Like he’ll try,” Thor responded.

Most of us laughed after that.

Our base was slowly coming together. Our team had just started. Our first mission was not a complete success, but it was a success. Soon, others who had lost their homes would come. I could feel it. I could sense that soon, there would not be six, but six hundred senshi, squadrons of senshi, dedicating their lives to fighting against injustice and evil.

I know our reputation with the Lanterns isn’t that good, but I swear, we’ll try our best to be better.

I look up at the motto… Amare et castigare… to love and punish, and smile. Somehow, I think that this is just the start of something big…

Author’s Note: I am thinking about making this a monthly series (if I have the time, more on that later), and need some help. What good is a Sailor Corp without villains? Any help will be great.
