Jedite suddenly became aware of an unknown sensation where
once there had been nothing. It was as if his brain had been dormant so
long, he had forgotten how to use his senses. This feeling could have
been a sight, a sound, a smell, anything. Slowly, the feeling coalesced
into a sound, a droning sound. There were definitely words, but they
blurred into each other and were lost. Jedite waited, trying to make
sense of the words, they became clearer, he could understand the sounds, but
there was no comprehension. Eventually his eyes began to open, or he
thought they had, for they opened to darkness almost as deep as that behind
his eyelids, but where before there was empty black nothingness, now were the
outline of dark shapes against a darker background. “The outline of a
humanoid figure holding a staff, with what might be long wavy hair,” Jedite
puzzled to himself, “a woman, perhaps royalty… Queen Beryl!”
Jedite’s mind was momentarily flooded with memories of his
life before and after being seduced by Beryl, swearing allegiance to the King
of the Earth, serving the Kingdom as Endymion’s bodyguard, meeting Beryl and
gaining a tremendous power from her, betraying the King and attacking the
Moon Kingdom, slaying the Senshi in cold blood, and the final flood of the
white light of the Silver Crystal. For an instant Jedite was remorseful
and repented his actions in the past, but Beryl, revived and informed by Metallia
that this would happen, continued her prepared incantation. It was
designed to undo the work of Queen Serenity, and repress their memories so
that the Shitennou would be loyal to her once again.
Even as his memories faded, Jedite sat bolt upright in
shock, or would have if he hadn’t still been more than half encased in, and
indeed composed of, his namesake mineral jadeite. Beryl finished her
incantation before moving to Jedite’s side. “Rest my General.”
She said softly, but with a menacing undertone. “Save your strength for
when you are free of your seal.” Jedite sank back onto his rocky bed as
Beryl set about the task of reviving the other Shitennou.
For some weeks, Jedite could do nothing but brood
anxiously in the darkness, still waiting to be free of his mineral
prison. His memories of his life in the Kingdom of Earth were gone once
again, replaced by malice and hatred toward the Moon Kingdom. The other
Shitennou were in a similar situation, but due to the acoustic properties of
the cave, they were able to communicate with each other. Jedite’s voice
had returned just as the others’ had, but he was unable to pierce the still
air, on occasion though he could hear the others. He heard them talk of
their future with Beryl as Kings of the Earth, about the state of their
renewed strength, and he could hear them mocking Jedite, the weakling who
couldn’t yet speak, the little boy among men who would never amount to
anything, the little brat who thought he could be a General.
At first Jedite tried to respond, tried to rebuke their
claims, but despite the fact that he could speak just as loud as the others,
the cave would not allow his words to reach their ears. So Jedite lay
alone in the dark, cursing the world, cursing the cave, and cursing the others,
all the while their words echoed in his ears, driving him deeper and deeper
into the grip of the evil power that had been sown into his fate. “One
day.” He thought. “One day I will be the strongest of the
Shitennou, and they will bow before me. They will all bow before the
majesty of Jedite!”
